This course is for professionals working or aspiring to work in fields related to child and youth welfare and protection, such as youth work, education, social work, and counselling.
In this unit, you will learn how to communicate effectively with young people and respond to youth cultures and subcultures and young person’s own development, and how to work with the young person as a focus. You will also develop the skill of critical reflection on own practice and values while working with young people. This unit not only enriches your current knowledge and skills but also provides a substantial boost in your skills development, which will prove invaluable in supporting young individuals.
Working effectively with young people in a youth work context prepares youth work professionals to support and empower young people while addressing social and cultural influences affecting them. This unit provides the tools to effectively engage with and assist young people in navigating the challenges posed by these influences.
Supporting young people to create opportunities in their lives involves equipping them with the necessary skills and resources to access education, training, and employment opportunities, and promoting their resilience and self-efficacy. Participants will learn how to access and signpost appropriate services and resources to help young people achieve their goals and aspirations.

The Youth Focused Support Short Course is studied over a 3-month period. Due dates for each assessment have been scheduled throughout the course to assist you to keep on track within the maximum time frame allowed. Should you have challenges completing within the allocated time frames, extensions are available on request. You will find this information in the Student Handbook.
As part of your application, you will be asked to complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Skills evaluation to demonstrate that you can apply yourself to this level of study. If you have evidence of prior study this evaluation may be waived.
For each unit of competency, you will be asked to complete a range of assessment tasks that will demonstrate your knowledge and skills on the topic being assessed. These assessment tasks may include questions, written reports, case study analysis, workplace examples and practical demonstrations of your skills. The practical demonstration of your skills will often involve you role playing a scenario that simulates a particular role in the workplace.
On submission of your assessment tasks, we aim to provide you with feedback within 7 working days. This time frame may be extended during school holiday periods.
On enrolment, you will be allocated a qualified trainer with current experience in youth work, pastoral care and chaplaincy services. As this course is delivered online, we offer a range of opportunities for you to engage with your allocated trainer where you can ask questions, gain clarification around the content of the course or the assessment tasks and receive training and support.
Your training and assessment resources are stored in our online platform and can be accessed when you are connected to the internet. This flexibility helps to fit your study around your work and family commitments whilst remaining within your allocated time frame. You can also print the online resources if you prefer a hard copy resource tool.
You will need to have a device to access the internet and a camera for presentations and roleplay assessments. You will also need an email address where we can send you instructions and updates on your studies.

If you are applying to enrol in the Youth Focused Support Short Course as an online student, we can accept your application any time throughout the school year. If you are enrolling into face to face training as a part of a group program, the commencement dates will be provided to you on application. Please Note: that face to face training may be through an online platform or in unique situations, actual classroom training.
